Four Expert Tips to Buy Art

The art market and the world of collecting are as wide as we can imagine. Today, there is a wide range of art galleries, artists, fairs and exhibitions all around us. Modern art, sculptures, antiques, jewelry –where do you start when it’s time to make a choice of these beautiful works? In this article, I have highlighted the top four tips to help you buy the best art works that will always bring satisfaction to you every day. So, let’s dig in!

#1: You will know what your work is

The first step will be to be clear about what we want to buy. Maybe we have a certain space at home for a painting, for a piece of furniture or we just want to renew or indulge ourselves.

When choosing it, it is recommended to be guided by the emotion that the work of art transmits to us. You should not get carried away by influences and opinions of third parties; it is better to have your own criteria and react in front of the work.

#2: submit yourself and be ready to be advised

In this aspect, the role of the gallery owner (in the case of acquiring your work in a gallery) or even the artist if you are lucky enough to coincide with it will be fundamental. The expert advice is essential in a purchase, but of course without influencing the buyer decision.

#3: The bigger the price, the higher the price?

Normally yes, although there are exceptions that are related to the era in which it is painted or the support, for example, a painting by an artist at a certain time may have more value than others.

We must be clear about the money we have and what we want to allocate to that purchase. This exercise will help us to limit the number of works we can access. There are scales that can guide us, but I think the best guarantee is to be guided by an expert: the gallerist or the antique dealer.

#4: Know what you want to buy?

As we commented at the beginning of the article, visualizing the place where we will paint our work can be helpful when choosing what we want to buy; or do the exercise of visiting fairs, galleries (like Galerie LeRoyer Montréal), or consult the websites of artists on the Internet.
