Cleaning Granite Countertops-Do’s And Don’ts

Granite kitchen countertops are not difficult to clean and maintain. However, if proper care is not taken, they can lose their aesthetic appeal with scratches and even cracks over time. If you do not want your investment to go to waste, there are certain DOs and DONTs you must follow when it comes to cleaning.

Caring for your Granite au Sommet countertops is very easy. All you need to make sure is that you and your kids avoid bad habits. Since granite is already an excellent material, you won’t have to stress a lot about its maintenance. It is best to consult with experts to avoid damaging your investment.

DO’s and DONT’s of cleaning granite countertops

DO’s

  • Use a solution of water and soap.

If you want to clean dirt and grime from the countertops, simply use a homemade water and soap solution instead of store-bought harsh liquids. However, in some cases, a special cleaner may be required. It is best to consult with professionals to buy the ideal cleaner for your countertop before proceeding.

  • Clean spills immediately.

While granite does not get easily stained, it is still important to clean spills as soon as they happen. Wine, fruit juices, coffee, tomato sauce, and sodas may not leave a significant mark on granite’s surface as they do on marbles, but they may stain it if not wiped up at the right time. You should also be careful about cooking oil spills.

  • Use a soft cloth and sponge to clean the surface.

Always make sure to use a soft cloth or a sponge when cleaning granite. Using brushes or other products with rough surfaces can leave scratches.

DONT’s

  • Do not use acidic substances to clean.

You might have heard from your family members, friends, or neighbors that acidic substances like lemon juice and oils can get rid of stains easily. While that may be true in some cases, these substances can easily make your granite look dull and etch. While granite does not usually lose its shine easily, it is better to be safe than sorry.

  • Do not sit or stand on your countertops.

Granite is indeed a very hard material which makes it durable. However, they are not flexible like a laminate countertop surface. Moreover, they do not have plywood backing, so when too much weight is applied, it could result in a crack.

  • Do not allow your pets to sleep on the countertops.

Cats can seem harmless little pets, but their paws can make scratches on any surface. Moreover, they also carry dirt in their paws, which creates an additional requirement for cleaning and maintenance.
